Vale consists of two non-contiguous areas in the north of Guernsey, and was twinned with the Normandy port of Barneville-Carteret in 1987. The population of Vale is around 9 and a half thousand, and notable attractions include Vale Castle, L'Ancresse Common and L'Ancresse Bay, and Fort le Marchant shooting range.
Vale Castle
Vale castle is an Iron Age fort, situated on a hill on the east coast and it is thought that it was build around 1370-1400. The double walled hillfort is unique in Guernsey the site has been used for military activities for over 2000 years. By the end of the 19th Century the barracks at the fort were abandoned, and during the German Occupation of 1940-1945 the German's demolished them and built concrete fortifications in and around the castle. Excavations took place in 1980 and found pottery dating to 5/600BC.
