Located on the eastern side of the Island, St Peter Port is the capital of Guernsey and a bustling harbour town that is widely considered to be the Channel Islands' most beautiful. Still maintaining its 17th century charm and character of a bygone age, the High Street even has its original cobbles, and housed in an historic chapel building, the beautiful church is the town's centrepiece. The landscape of St Peter Port offers some of the best views in the Channel Islands, and Castle Cornet - the ancient royal fortress, is a great viewpoint for the stunning scenery as well as to visit its museums.
With a community of just over 16,000, the official language of St Peter Port has historically been French despite the fact that Guernsey is actually a possession of the United Kingdom. Due to its name and fact that it is considered the Channel Islands' premier port, the town is best known for its port and harbour. A busy entrepôt since Roman times, it is Guernsey's main port for passengers and enables access to other Islands such as Herm and Sark for additional sight-seeing.
St Peter Port is a popular shopping town with a wealth of independent retailers and bargains to be had. Electronic and photographic equipment, jewellery and perfume are all good, low duty buys, along with wines, spirits and tobacco. It's not just the scenery and shopping that make St Peter Port a worthwhile visit, there is a huge variety of tourist attractions and events held there to suit all interests.
