An award-winning museum that was opened in 1978, The Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery is one of only a few purpose-built post-war museums in Britain. Its design is based on the original Victorian bandstand from the garden and cleverly incorporates this into the structure.
The Museum houses a permanent art collection and an Exhibition Gallery that houses a wide range of temporary exhibitions. The 'Story of Guernsey' is a permanent exhibition which interprets the natural and human history of Guernsey, portraying some of the major factors that formed the development of the island and its people. There is a section showcasing the varied historic collections upon which the museum was founded, and the building also houses several temporary exhibition spaces - the Brian White Gallery, the Rona Cole Gallery and the Lukis Room.
There is also an audio-visual/lecture theatre and a shop selling a range of publications and souvenirs. Café Victoria, located in the bandstand itself, serves light meals and refreshments in a setting with a wonderful view over the islands.
