Castle Cornet & Museums
St Peter Port, Guernsey
Castle Cornet has stood guard over the town and harbour of St Peter Port for nearly
eight centuries. Guernsey's ancient royal fortress, it features three museums 'The
Story Of Castle Cornet Museum', 'Maritime Museum' and '201 Squadron Museum'.
The history of the Castle from pre-historic times to the present day is explored
in the first museum. There are many life-size figures based on real people and soldiers
of the time that lead the visitor into the Castle story. The vibrant graphics, detailed
models and objects discovered during a series of excavations interpret the story,
helped by touch screen computers, video technology and special effects.
Situated in the 18th century Upper Barracks, the Maritime Museum traces Guernsey's
nautical history from pre-historic times to the present day. Life-sized displays,
scale models and museum objects portray Guernsey's fishing industries, ship building
and naval history and there is also a collection of Maritime Art and a section on
Safety at Sea.
The 201 Squadron Museum is unique as it is the only squadron museum open to the
public. 201 Squadron has links with Guernsey dating back to the 1930's, and played
a big part in fighting over the Western Front in 1914 and served with Coastal Command
during the Second World War. The story of 201 Squadron is told through photographs
and documents, personal and aircraft relics, models and interactive displays.
It is open daily during the period April - October, and the museums have staggered
opening hours during the day. Castle Cornet also has a museum shop located in the
old guard house and a refectory serving light meals and refreshments, as well as
4 lovely period gardens to explore.
