Currency in Guernsey
If you are visiting Guernsey from the UK then good news is that Guernsey accepts
British currency, saving you time and hassle and keeping things simple. Guernsey
does have its own currency however- the Guernsey Pound, which has been used in Guernsey
since 1921.
Not too dissimilar to the British Pound Sterling, before then mainly French Currency
was used, and Guernsey still has its own £1 note, as well as a £50, £20, £10 and
£5 note like Britain. All the pound sterling currency (including Scottish and Northern
Irish notes) and the Jersey pound may be used in Guernsey. Some shops also accept
Euros and major credit cards are widely accepted throughout the islands. Channel
Islands notes and coins are not accepted in the UK.
There is no VAT in Guernsey but it is not a duty-free island. ATM machines are available
at most high street banks in St Peter Port, the airport and selected sites, including
supermarkets, garages and some out of town banks throughout the island.
